Quick Update
Perfect Dark
So, I managed to watch that new Melee video this week. Holy crap. Everyone who had their minds blown was totally justified in having their minds blown. My mind is so very blown right now. Wowzerskates. If I had brought a GameCube with me, I would be practicing right now, because that video is bloody inspiring. I want to see what happens now, in terms of whether or not the tournament community is going to get good at replicating/expanding on the things in that video, and what effects that’ll have on how people play etc.
Teaching
Continuing to teach. It’s pretty satisfying to teach for a few days, and then see the students knowing stuff they didn’t know before, and to know that it was your doing. Also, I found out this week that a lot of my math students don’t know a lot more than I thought they didn’t know, so I’m going to have to do a lot more review with them. It’s pretty disappointing for me, and I’m sure it will be for them to, because they want to start a new topic that’s actually on the curriculum for this year.
Also, I’m continuing to experiment with ways to teach computer stuff. At the moment I’m messing around with creating Word docs that explain something and then have some sort of excercise for the students to do, and then having the students at each computer read/do these during class. In theory, this should be a much faster way to go about things than trying to explain it either on the chalkboard or directly.
Toyota Corollas
So, it turns out I’ve been lying whenever I’ve talked about the roads here. A while back, I saw a Toyota Corolla in my village. (White Toyota Corollas seem to be immensely popular throughout Tanzania.) And a while back, apparently one of my sitemates got a lift in one from her village to Karatu. I don’t know if they get around by taking alternate/nicer roads, or if they have to be driven hella carefully, or if they’re just way more badass than you’d expect, but they seem to be able to get around, although very few of them are used around here.
