Tanzanian Names
Just a quick update, a random cultural note that I’d long forgotten is unique here.
In Tanzania, people don’t have a first name and then a family name. They have a first name, and it is followed by their father’s first name, and that is possibly followed by their father’s father’s first name.
So, for instance, if I were Tanzanian, my name would be “Christopher Louis” or “Christopher Louis Henry” or “Christopher L. Henry”. I’m not sure how people to decide when to go back as far as their grandfather and when not to. And I’ve never seen anyone go back as far as great-grandfather, but I wouldn’t be too surprised if they sometimes do.

Thanks for this – I’d had no idea of this.

I am married to a Tanzanian guy and we are going to have a baby girl. We want to give her a first name and a double barrel surname, (mine and his). Will this cause any legal or inheritance problems in TAnzania?

Hi. I would assume that it wouldn’t cause any problems, but I really don’t know. Sorry to not be of much help!
